Ram Nath Kovind is an Indian lawyer and politician who is the 14th President-elect of India. He was a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party was nominated as a presidential candidate by the decision of NDA union and won the 2017 presidential election on 20 July.  Kovind will assume office on 25 July 2017.

Ram Nath Kovind was born 1 October 1945, Paraunkh village, Derapur, He is only the 2nd Dalit leader ever to be elected to the post. He served as the 35th Governor of Bihar from 2015 to 2017 and was a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006.

Political Career – BJP member

As his official involvement into politics came with his joining the BJP in 1991. Due to his already rising reputation as a high-profile, he was elected to become a member of the Rajya Sabha from the state of Uttar Pradesh in April 1994. He went on to serve two continuous terms, which added up to a total of 12 years, until March 2006. During his stint as a member of the Rajya Sabha, he served on the Parliamentary Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes, Home Affairs, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Social Justice and Empowerment, Law and Justice. As Kovind was the President of the BJP Dalit Morcha and occupied the post of the President of the All-India Koli Samaj as well. After donating his ancestral home to the RSS, he contested from Ghatampur and Bhognipur UP assembly constituencies on the BJP ticket, unfortunately, lost both of these elections. But, his judgment as a BJP personnel remained discredited, and at one point he even served as the party’s national spokesperson.

Other Appointments

Ram Nath Kovind has served on the Board of management of Dr. B.R Ambedkar University, Lucknow and as on the Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta.

Governor of Bihar

On 8 August 2015, Kovind was appointed as Governor of Bihar. On 16 August 2015, the acting Chief Justice of Patna High Court, Iqbal Ahmad Ansari, administered the vow to Kovind as the 35th Governor of Bihar at Raj Bhawan, Patna.

2017 Presidential Campaign

Ram Nath Kovind received 2,930 votes valid, against former Speaker of the Lok Sabha- Meira Kumar, the presidential candidate of the Opposition who received 367,314 votes, and 77 votes were invalid.  Kovind is the first BJP candidate to be elected to the post and became only the 2nd Dalit representative to become President after K. R. Narayanan.
